School sports, select sports, work, family responsibilities or something different—these are all things students have going on in their lives outside the school day. Luckily, this year Yutan has made a change to the schedule that helps make sure athletes and other students have enough time to complete their homework.
Every day this year ends with a 30-minute period called Chieftain Time. Last year, students had a similar access period two days a week, but having the change from two to all five days this year has made a difference for the students. Overall, Yutan has made a really big and positive change this year having Chieftain Time every day–especially because it gives the time students need to complete homework with 93 percent of students liking the change.
The biggest benefit of Chieftain Time is the work time we get. I personally find this to be helpful because of the sports that take up my time. Whether students have homework from teachers that day or work from a class missed due to sickness or activities, we now get five options for a study hall instead of two days. In fact, 93 percent of students surveyed said they use this time for homework.
This extra time is especially beneficial for athletes because sports take time away to study for a test or do extra homework that’s due during the week.
“During the sports seasons, every single night of my week is taken up with hours of practices, games or meets, so I don’t get a whole ton of time for homework outside of school,” one senior said.
However, even students who aren’t in sports are benefitting from Chieftain Time every day because the extra time ensures everyone can get their work done.
“Having Chieftain Time every day makes it easier so I don’t have to stress about when and where I am going to do homework,” a sophomore said.
Another benefit to the changed schedule is being able to I personally find being able to go to other teachers helpful because if I need help on a problem, I can go to the teacher any day of the week without leaving any of my other classes. Teachers also see the benefit as well as students.
“Daily I have multiple students come in and at least two or three students are in my classroom at a time,” one teacher said. “In addition, my seventh graders go to other teachers to ask for help.”
With now five days instead of two, I can now get work done faster and not worry as much. Overall, students are glad that Yutan has made the change to have Chieftain Time every day. I now don’t have to worry about the missed work from school sports, select sports, work, family responsibilities or something different.
