Break-ups can affect people in many ways, with some moving on quickly and others dwelling on what they could have done differently. This is the idea that is explored in this year’s one-act play.
This year, Yutan is performing a one-act play called “The End” by Kristyn Leigh Robinson. The play is a rom-com that centers around a character named Rachel, played by junior Lexi Bisaillon, who navigates the complexities of her wounded ego in the aftermath of a breakup. Throughout the play, Rachel embarks on a journey of self-discovery and emotional healing, ultimately realizing it is time to move forward and embrace new beginnings.
“My character is Rachel, and she’s special because she narrates the whole story and has a lot of character development throughout the play,” Bisaillon said.
While Rachel is on a journey of self-discovery and trying to get over her ex-boyfriend, she wouldn’t be able to move on without the help of the counter girl, played by junior Bella Sliva.
“I play Counter Girl, and she is special because she is the sassy, lovable character. It’s pretty cool being Counter Girl. It’s fun to make people laugh,” Sliva said.
Finally, coming to add a bit more flare and comedy to the show is Benny, played by freshman Isaiah Hancock and accompanied by Benny’s wife, played by freshman Kaydi Ward. Benny can be seen as a funny and very animated character.
“I feel kind of silly playing Benny, in a good way. I get to make crowds of people laugh with some of the scenes, and it just feels great to be able to act for people and make them laugh,” Hancock said.
The play is more than the people on the stage, though, as the crew helps behind the scenes. The crew has changed a lot this year; there are more people on crew this year than any other year. Crew is also a lot more fun this year versus last year.
“I feel that one act has been fun this year. The tech has been on top of things and has really helped bring the show together,” senior Reagan Wilson said.
They have gone to York, Lincoln Southwest and DC West this year for competition, outside conference districts. However, they are doing better this season than last year.
“We have gone to York for a competition and we got 5th place, This is the first year we have placed that high at York. We did go to Lincoln Southwest High and got 5th place as well.” one-act director Matt Gunter said.
This year all of the actors have got outstanding actor awards. Competitions could be stressful, but because of the fun the actors and tech are having, they would encourage others to join one act next year.
“It’s a lot of work to learn all of the lines, but it’s nice to be able to be yourself without judgment, so if there’s an opportunity out there for one act or anything else, go for it because if you take that opportunity, it can lead you in the right direction,” Hancock said.
