If Yutan boys basketball had a hall of fame, Brady Timm would be in it, leading the team to four state appearances and a championship game. Even though he’s currently at Doane University, he is still impacting the team through his training relationship with one of the new players on the team, sophomore Ryan Maguire.
“[Ryan’s] dad was looking for someone to train Ryan,” Timm said. “My step dad said that I would be able to do that for him and do it for cheap.”
With Timm being an experienced basketball player himself, playing his whole life and now in college, he was able to give Maguire a variety of different workouts to improve his skills.
“We usually do eight sets of different types of squats. We work on being quick with lateral movements and just in general,” Maguire said. “And then when it comes to basketball, we do a lot of one-on-one and scoring and finishing. Really we just work on a variety of different things.”
The consistent training and the variety of different workouts have improved Maguire’s athleticism and skills.
“Training with Brady has improved me as an overall player,” Maguire said. “He’s taught me a lot of reads, what to do as a point guard and how to be a better player.”
Timm has also noticed the improvements Maguire has made.
“Ryan understands the game of basketball and is extremely committed to the game and getting better. He has gotten stronger and more athletic since I have known him, and that makes him a huge threat at getting downhill,” Timm said. “He also is a huge competitor and just wants to win for his teammates every day.”
Not only did Timm help improve Maguire as a player, but he also had a big impact on Maguire’s decision to transfer to Yutan this school year.
“Brady Timm gave me the idea to come here, so I visited, met the coaches and players and I really enjoyed being around everyone,” Maguire said. “It felt like a way closer environment than at my past school.”
Besides the close relationships, the size of Yutan compared to his previous school, Westview, was a big selling point.
“The biggest thing I did to get Ryan to Yutan was just telling him that he could make a legitimate impact on a team and play in meaningful games for a great community instead of having a limited role at Westview for the next couple of years,” Timm said.
Maguire then decided it would be best to transfer.
“The change was different because of how big Westview was compared to Yutan, but over time it was really easy for me because of how close I got with everyone,” Maguire said.
The newfound friendships made it easy for Maguire to build bonds with his new team.
“He adds a lot to the team chemistry because he is fun to be around. Everyone loves him because he’s just Ryan,” sophomore Nathan Daniell said.
Maguire is also a significant factor on the court.
“Ryan’s another great defender for us,” boys basketball head coach Jesse Gardner said. “The biggest thing he does is he handles the ball super well and allows everybody else to play to their strengths and not have to do much. As a point guard, he does a lot for the team.”
Not only has the team noticed Maguire’s positive impact, but he has also noticed the benefits of joining his new team, making his decision worthwhile.
“This Yutan team, we’re really more of a family compared to just basketball teammates,” Maguire said. “I’m glad I made the change.”
