During school hours, if you walk into a classroom, you might notice a few kids holding fidget toys, specifically Needohs. Needohs can be cubes or spheres that are filled with non-toxic dough. That means they are squishy but will always return to their original shape. Needohs first became popular in 2020. The toy died down for a little bit but rose in popularity again in 2026. The question is, are these Needohs helping students focus or distracting them? I strongly believe that they help students stay focused, but I can also see why they can be a distraction.
When I’m in class working on either a worksheet or an essay, I usually have my Needoh, a pink gumdrop, right there. I am a person who likes to fidget with my hands a lot. So instead of fidgeting with my hands, I fidget with my Needoh. I feel like Needohs help me stay focused in class, help reduce anxiety and relieve stress. As a high school student about to graduate, I find that it is a very stressful time in my life right now, and I could use any relief I can get, even if it is from a Needoh.
My opinion of Needohs being a good thing might be swayed because I own a few of them, but I am not the only person who has a strong opinion about Needohs being a good thing. According to Sensory Assist, sensory tools such as Needohs help students channel excess energy without leaving their seats. Instead of being up running around, they can be in their seat playing with their Needoh quietly. This is important, especially during school, where students need to stay focused to learn and get their work done. Sensory tools like Needohs are also weighted items, and this has a calming effect that can help regulate emotions. Just as I had said before, this is important so students can stay focused in a school setting. Needohs also help students stay focused by reducing anxiety during school. According to the brand The Needoh Toy, a school environment is not supposed to be a place where students are constantly anxious. But let’s be honest here, school does make a few students anxious, and that’s why having a Needoh is important. Therefore, I believe that Needohs help students stay focused during class because they can release energy and reduce anxiety.

The only counterargument that I see to students having Needohs is that it can be a distraction. Sometimes when the teacher is talking, students will whisper to each other, asking if they can play with their Needoh. If one student asks for it, then a whole bunch of other students will ask to play with it. I have seen in Physics class that whenever students are bored, they will throw the Needoh up at the ceiling or play catch with it. This can cause the class to get off topic when students should be learning instead. Needohs also have a risk of popping. If they pop in class, that can cause an even bigger distraction for the students. This can lead to the class being off topic for the rest of the period. That is the reason I have seen a few teachers ban Needohs in class, so they don’t pop and make a mess.
Despite a few drawbacks, however, the benefits of Needohs outweigh the cons, and they are a good thing for students to have. The students need to keep in mind some rules, such as not throwing them or squeezing them too hard. They keep students focused while trying to learn or work on homework. They channel excess energy, have a calming effect and help reduce anxiety. That is why I strongly believe that they help students stay focused, but I can also see why they can be a distraction.
