Don’t forget to BeReal

New app changes the way teens view social media

Keeping up with your friends can be tough enough, and with so many social media apps having edited images plastered on the screen, how are we supposed to know what is fake and what is real? Well, with a new trendy app coming into play this summer, staying “real” has become the new game.

The app BeReal has recently become the favorite amongst Gen Z with its promotion of authenticity. First released in 2020, BeReal users post a daily picture from the front and back of their camera simultaneously without any filters or editing, hence its name.

Each picture must be posted within two minutes of the app’s notification time or it’ll be counted late.

Each picture must be posted within two minutes of the app’s notification time or it’ll be counted late. With only a two-minute grace period to post, people don’t have the option of Photoshop or using editing software. For example, much of the time I take doing my BeReal is spent deciding what face I want to make rather than trying to make sure my face looks clear.

Another way BeReal makes its users be authentic is with its randomized notifications. BeReal announces a newly designated time every day to capture an image. A notification appears on the user’s phone saying, “Time to BeReal. 2 min left to capture a BeReal and see what your friends are up to!” This signals that a new BeReal is up and that you are on the clock, which I think is the best part about the app because it’s a way for friends to compete to see who can post their BeReal first.

Along the path of authenticity, BeReal ensures that no two posts will be the same. The app doesn’t allow its users to view, react or comment on any other post until users post a BeReal of their own making it so people can’t copy another’s post.

Additionally, BeReal has its own way of “liking” others’ photos. “Reacting” is the app’s way of showing interest in your friends’ pictures by posting a selfie of your facial expression. Users can also set designated selfies instead of having to take a new live reaction to every post with one of the most popular being the “thumbs up” reaction. Reacting is a more fun way to like your friends’ posts without the use of a simple button.

But why do a few differences in a social media app make it so popular?

Compared to social media apps like Instagram, BeReal allows people to capture their true everyday lifestyle instead of fake images with lots of filters.

Compared to social media apps like Instagram, BeReal allows people to capture their true everyday lifestyle instead of fake images with lots of filters. Along with that, it has completely changed the way people see themselves. Most teenage girls would spend their time on Instagram comparing themselves to the ideal models with photoshopped pictures. BeReal only shows real pictures that were taken at a specific time that day, eliminating the possibility of using Photoshop.

Adding on, BeReal has no follow counts displayed, which completely gets rid of the power of having a following. It eliminates the potential of influencers on the app and focuses on authentic posts of people you know.

The app also has no advertisements featured, which provides a nice break from the constant pop-ups seen all over the social media world. While this may seem like a minor change, it truly is a positive to not have to click the “x” in the right-hand corner every five seconds.

Finally, another great feature is the Discovery page. BeReal is a worldwide app that shows everything happening around the globe at the specific time the notification is released. The Discovery page helps users find interesting posts like these and connect with people from around the world.

While many might see the app as simple front and back pictures with friends, BeReal has truly changed how we see ourselves and others for the better. So are you ready to be real?
